Tutankhamun is probably most famous for the treasures that were found in his tomb, but the gold and precious stones presently on display in Cairo only shows what was actually on the mummy itself. The tomb was robbed at least twice in antiquity, and most of the portable objects which were of greatest value were stolen from the main chambers then.

Luckily for us these ancient robbers did not penetrate as far as the sarcophagus itself, but we can only imagine what treasures were lost when the outer chambers were ransacked.
